Breastfeed naturally without creams or ointments

Why is it important to avoid ointments?

The glands in your nipple produce a fluid that triggers your baby's reflex to search for your breast. The scent of this fluid is similar to the amniotic fluid they are already familiar with from pregnancy. It helps your baby find your nipples and latch on properly. Creams, ointments, and similar products can alter this unique scent. Even when washing the skin thoroughly and properly, traces of these products can stay on your skin and then be ingested by your baby while breastfeeding. With Livella Silver Nursing Cups you can breastfeed without having to worry about this and keep that unique scent your baby loves.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Livella Silver Nursing Cups

The Livella Silver Nursing Cups are intended for use between breastfeeding sessions. They cover sore nipples, protect them from drying out and rubbing against clothing, and shield them from external pressure. They also prevent nipples from getting twisted and sticking to clothing. The nipple shields act as a barrier that covers the sore parts of the breast and supports the body’s natural wound healing process.

Clean your silver nursing cups before the first use by boiling them for 20 minutes. Caution: Burn hazard during boiling. Once you start using them, we recommend cleaning them daily with warm water and mild soap. Place the nipple shields directly on your nipples after breastfeeding. Add a few drops of breast milk into the cups to support your body’s natural healing process. Using other care products is neither necessary nor recommended. Our silver nursing cups comfortably fit under your nursing bra and Livella nursing pads. You can use medical adhesive tape to prevent the cups from slipping.

Wear your nipple shields before and after breastfeeding, and only take them off during breastfeeding sessions. You can stop using them as soon as your nipples are healed and use them again to protect your nipples if the pain returns.

You can start wearing silver nursing cups during pregnancy, as you may notice your nipples becoming more sensitive to rubbing and chafing from your bra and clothing. They prevent your nipples from getting twisted and chafing against clothing.

  • For personal use only.
  • Please clean thoroughly before the first use.
  • Please do not wear them during breastfeeding sessions.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Choking hazard if swallowed.
  • Keep away from heat. The silver might pose a burn hazard when heated.
  • Do not put your nipple shields in the freezer. Frostbite hazard when frozen.
  • The nipple shields are for external use only. Do not insert into body orifices.
  • Livella silver nursing cups are nickel-free.
  • Do not use the product if you are allergic to silver.
  • Stop wearing the nursing cups if skin becomes red or irritated.
  • Do not use the nipple shields on open wounds or inflamed skin (e. g. caused by fungal, viral, or bacterial infections). If symptoms persist, consult a doctor before use.

Silver may tarnish or suffer “discoloration” caused by the natural oxidation process from exposure to moisture, oxygen, and light. This is a feature of fine (99.9 % pure) silver and has no impact on product use.

Regularly clean your silver nursing cups (as well as after final use) with a mixture of baking soda, salt, and water to prevent discoloration. First, line a bowl with aluminum foil and fill with hot (but not boiling) water. Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of salt. Then, soak the silver nursing cups in the mixture for 1-2 minutes. Please note: Do not let them soak for more than 2 minutes. Take the silver nursing cups out of the bowl, rinse them thoroughly with clear water, dry them, place them in their pouch, and store them in a dark, dry place. Do not use silver cleaning products or silver cleaning towels on the silver nursing cups as these products may contain harmful substances. You can find detailed care instructions here.

Yes, you can clean the silver nursing cups with wound disinfectants. Rinse them thoroughly before placing them on your nipples to make sure none of the disinfectant is transferred to and ingested by your baby during your next breastfeeding session.

Our silver nursing cups have been tested for biocompatibility and toxicity by independent, accredited laboratories and comply with the ISO 10993 standards. This included testing whether silver ions are released from the material when it comes into contact with skin, sweat, or breast milk. The tests have shown that no silver ions are released from the material when the Livella Silver Nursing Cups are used, making them safe for both mother and child.

The purity of the silver guarantees the product’s safety since the material does not contain any other metals which could be harmful to your skin. .

Similar products consist of a core made of other metals such as copper, which is coated with a thin layer of silver. Other metals like lead or nickel are added to the alloy layer, so it can properly adhere to the copper core.

Our Livella Silver Nursing Cups are made of 99.9 % solid 999 silver, the purest silver available. Due to a special production process we have developed, they do not contain copper or any other metals. The certified silver we use is produced in Germany.

Silver nursing cups made of silver trilaminate have a copper core which is coated with a thin layer of silver. Trilaminate is used to cut manufacturing costs, as it is cheaper than pure silver. However, the added metals in the alloy can often cause allergic reactions when they come into contact with your skin.

The German TÜV Süd has tested the silver content of our Livella Silver Nursing Cups and confirmed they are made of 999 silver. We also check the purity of every batch of silver in our labs before the material is used for production. The material we use is sourced from a German supplier. You can find a copy of the test certificate issued by TÜV Süd in the product photo section. While a stamp with the purity grade of the material (e. g. 825, 925, or 999) may be required in some countries, it is not compulsory in Europe. Since manufacturers could add a stamp to their product without needing a third-party seal of approval, the test certificate is the only valid form of confirmation.

While a stamp with the purity grade of the material (e. g. 825, 925, or 999) may be required in some countries, it is not compulsory in Europe. Since manufacturers could add a stamp to their product without needing a third-party seal of approval, a test certificate is the only valid form of confirmation. At Livella, we have decided not to stamp our products to avoid damaging the surface, avoid causing unpleasant friction on sensitive skin, and to avoid snagging on the silver nursing cups.

This mark shows how pure the silver is or how much silver the product contains.. 999 silver is 99.9 % pure silver, which indicates the highest purity. The numbers 925, 835, and 800 designate lower purity silver. For instance, 835 silver only contains 83.5 % silver. The remaining components (16.5 %) are other metals such as copper, iron, or zinc. “Silver coating” means that a metal other than silver (usually copper) has been coated with a thin layer of silver. This is why silver-plated materials have no purity grade.

The Livella Silver Nursing Cups are manufactured to the highest quality standards at our production facility in Germany. Each silver nursing cup undergoes strict quality control and only leaves production if all requirements are met.

We do recommend removing any breast milk residue from your nipples before breastfeeding, but you don’t need to wash them before using our silver nursing cups. The silver nursing cups are made of the highest-quality pure silver, which means there is no risk of silver particles sticking to your nipples after you use them.

While the silver nursing cups fit any nipple size comfortably (1.78 inches in diameter and 0.43 inches in height), they are not designed to collect excess breast milk. This is why we recommend using our Livella Nursing Pads to absorb any milk that may leak between feedings.

The silver nursing cups are designed to support your body’s natural healing process by protecting your nipples from drying out, rubbing against clothing, and getting bent or twisted. Since there are no holes in the top, they cannot be used while breastfeeding.

Our silver nursing cups are made of pure 999 silver, which may tarnish and turn yellowish after a while. Tarnishing or ‘discoloration’ shows that the silver is pure and high-quality. It is a natural process (known as oxidation) caused by exposure to moisture, oxygen, and light.

You can find detailed care instructions for our Livella Silver Nursing Cups here.

The silver nursing cups’ anatomical design perfectly fits around your nipples. They are 0.43 inches in height and weigh 0.18 oz each, and are hardly noticeable or visible under your nursing bra.

The silver nursing cups can be used on all nipple sizes and shapes including flat and inverted nipples. They protect both the nipple and the areola from chafing against clothing or sticking to it.

In case of an existing fungal, viral or bacterial infection of the breast tissue, you should consult a doctor before starting to use silver nursing cups.

The silver nursing cups should cover the sore and irritated areas around the nipples to protect them against any unpleasant external impact such as chafing or sticking to clothing.

The silver nursing cups can be used on nipples and areolas of all sizes. What’s most important is that the nipple and other sore or sensitive areas are protected. The dimensions of our silver nursing cups (1.78 inches in diameter and 0.43 inches in height) are based on studies and the feedback of our moms who have already used them.

You can put the silver nursing cups in the fridge between breastfeeding sessions, but never in the freezer as this can cause frostbite.

Silver nursing cups help wounds heal faster and naturally. They prevent scabs by acting as a protective barrier and harnessing the natural healing properties of breast milk. Simply add a few drops of breast milk to the silver nursing cups to create a moist environment where new skin cells can spread more easily over damaged ones.

Fungal infection or mastitis may occur when your immune system is weakened and bacteria from your baby’s mouth gets into a milk duct. The silver nursing cups do not cause infection. Please consult a physician, nurse, or lactation consultant to properly treat the infection or mastitis.

Using the Livella Silver Nursing Cups does not cause breast engorgement. Breast engorgement can happen for several reasons when breasts (and milk ducts) are not emptied before new milk comes in. As a result, new milk accumulates and can’t flow freely, and your breasts may feel hard, painful, and sensitive. We recommend treating your symptoms before you start using the silver nursing cups again to avoid discomfort. External factors that cause breast engorgement include stress or wearing a bra that is too tight.

No, the shape of your nipples will not change after wearing our silver nursing cups. Their sole purpose is to shield sore nipples before and after breastfeeding sessions.

For hygienic reasons, we advise against giving used silver nursing cups to friends or family, even if you no longer need them.
